on foreign policy at that speech at the virginia military institute here in lexington later on this morning. and the campaign did release some excerpts from the speech that we could look at to sort of see where he might be going with this address later on this morning. a few things to point out, carol. he's going to be going after the president as you mentioned just a few moments ago on those diplomatic attacks in benghazi, libya. he's going to be talking about that attack as the work of al qaeda, saying that that was likely the work of the same forces that attacked the united states on september 11th. now, a few other things he's going to be talking about. he's going to be calling for new sanctions, stronger sanctions against the government in iran to prevent that country from developing nuclear weapons. he's also going to be talking about arming the syrian rebels. lastly, carol, as part of his remarks that were releasted by the campaign, interesting to note that he is also going to be calling for a prosperous state of palestine to stand side by side with the state of israel. that's a very

really see eye to eye on a lot of foreign policy issues. the only one that we really heard that was different was what you had actually talked about and that was romney's stance on arming the syrian rebels. how does the united states go about doing that, because we know the obama administration even learning in the "new york times", they're discouraging u.s. allies, arab allies to actually get involved. >> yeah. you know, if you would have lisped that speech, you would assume atmospherically that romney had very strong disagreements with the obama administration, but his problem is that obama has run a foreign policy almost like a moderate republican. it's been internationalist, and not too liberal in temz of the human rights oriented. the syrian issue is the one place romney can find to make a distinction. as you point out, it's a very difficult policy to enact. the syrian insurgency is really an uprising of 100 armed militias all over syria that are not particularly well connected to one another. >> you wouldn't understand the goals of the people you are arming, and there

romney delivers what his campaign is calling a major foreign policy speech in virginia. yesterday, he was in florida, a key swing state. late their week, the running mates duke it out in their debate. joe biden and paul ryan face off in the only vice presidential debate in kentucky. and a new poll by the university of denver, where last week's presidential debate was held, gives president obama a slight edge over mitt romney in colorado, a key swing state. 47% to 43%. paul steinhauser joins us live now. what do you make of all this? >> reporter: the new poll numbers. those are pretty much in line, john, with what we saw prior to the debate. other polls conducted in colorado, as you mentioned, a key battleground state, where the president had a slight edge, same story. this new university of denver poll. among independents, the president has a double-digit lead. when are we going to see more polls? you're going to see a bunch over the next 48 hours the next couple of days leading up to the vice presidential debate. a bunch of major organizations, including cnn, are in the field right n

the commonwealth here. mitt romney has picked virginia as the place to lay out his foreign policy agenda. the governor's going to be speaking at the virginia pill tear institute in lexington tomorrow. larry, why is virginia so important this time around? >> well, last time virginia was the closest to president obama's national average. nationally, he got 52.9% of the vote. virginia, he got 52.6%. so virginia is increasingly seen as a fulcrum in the national election. doesn't have to turn out the same way this time, obviously, but virginia is a prize that both sides want, and there's a good reason. it's actually very, very close. much closer than some of the national polls have suggested. >> larry, how has the state changed politically and/or demographically over the past four years? >> well, you've added a percent minority to virginia's population. i would say probably white voters in virginia will constitute no more than 72% of the turnout. the rest will be minority. president obama gets 80% on average of all minorities put together whereas romney needs to cross, in this state certainly
